BERLIN - Sophie Hannah

Most of you may know I went on a little city break recently with my boyfriend to Berlin. It was pretty last minute and we booked cheap flights via Ryan Air; they were only £30 each for a return! Such a bargain! We booked a little apartment via Air BnB which you can find here. It was situated on Schlesische Straße in the district of Friedrichshain which had a very Shoreditch, East London vibe. It was a very cool area with lots of graffiti, quirky shops and restaurants and Berlin’s most famous clubs.

We stayed there because the Air BnB was really affordable, about £200 for the 3 night stay. Obviously you can do it a lot cheaper if you want to stay in a hostel but hotel prices were much more expensive. Plus you get your own little apartment. Gaby our host was a very welcoming lady; she showed us around the apartment and made sure we had everything and even chatted to us about places we should definitely go and see.

We were very lucky with the weather out there; it was about 25-30 degrees throughout our whole stay. The perfect weather for sightseeing! We had pre-planned all of the places we wanted to see and visit as we had not visited Berlin before. We looked up landmarks, memorials, museums, shops and restaurants that were a must see for us and then pin pointed them on to a Berlin map via the Ulmon Map app I had download from the app store. It was really useful to have as all of the addresses were on there and we could see how far away each place was from each other to work out what we would do on the same days.

We purchased a 4 day tourist pass to use the Subway trains which cost us around 35 euros each; so pretty affordable! The transport in Berlin was really easy to use, especially if you’re used to travelling around London, it’s very similar.

We visited 3 different districts of Berlin whilst we were there: Tiergarten, Mitte and Friedrichshain. It’s very interesting to see how different each one is; very much like London. There was lots to do in each place, but Friedrichshain is definitely the party location. If you want to experience the bars and clubs I’d recommend going on the weekend as nothing much was open when we were there.

Expect to do a lot of walking by the way, so bring comfy shoes! We must have walked the length of the marathon by the time we headed back to the airport to go home.

Overall my boyfriend and I had a lovely little break in Berlin and we both said we’d go back!
