THINGS TO DO IN BERLIN

Travel

Before I went on my city break, my boyfriend and I made a list of things to do in Berlin. We thought it would be easier this way as with city breaks you don’t have much time so you need to plan what you’re going to do and on what day. I’m so glad we did this and we had enough time to do everything we wanted.

After creating our list, I went on the Apple app store to see if there were any useful maps. I downloaded the ‘Berlin Subway’ app which was extremely useful for getting around and then I downloaded the ‘Berlin Ulmon’ app which was exactly what we needed. It was a map of Berlin but also a search engine for restaurants, entertainment, clubs, coffee shops, sightseeing spots, the lot! Nearly everything was pin pointed on the map and it allowed you to put little stars on the places you wanted to add to your wish list. Before we headed to the airport, I made sure I had all of the things we wanted to do pin pointed with a star. This made it so much easier for us when it came to figuring out what we do on each day as you could see what was close to each other. So here’s a list of things to do in Berlin…

BERLIN ZOO

A fabulous zoo in the heart of the city. Located in Tiergarten near lots of restaurants and shops the zoo is surrounded by beautiful trees and greenery. You’d never know you were in the middle of the city until you looked up and saw a huge city building in the background. It was very cool and they had some amazing animals that they don’t have in the UK. Gorillas, polar bears, zebras, you name it. The zoo was pretty big, but it wasn’t busy at all. We went on a Wednesday at around 11am and we were out by 1.30pm. We had a lovely morning strolling through the zoo enjoying the hot weather. And for only 15 euros person!

DRINK A STEIN

Ok, ok this wasn’t my drink. But come on, I had to have a photo with it! When my boyfriend ordered a stein and mentioned it was a large beer, I just assumed it was a normal size. When this came out I was utterly shocked! It was absolutely ginormous! You can see how much bigger it is than my head! I’m not a big fan of beer so I left the drinking of it to my boyfriend. However if you come to Berlin, you got to at least sip one (or have a stein selfie).

STROLL THROUGH THE STREETS OF BERLIN

There’s so much to do in Berlin, but for me it was just strolling through the city that made it magical. It’s such a cool and beautiful city with lots of sights and it’s so nice to just walk around as you stumble upon new places and sights.

BERLIN WALL

This is definitely a must see. We didn’t realise that our apartment was so close to it and we had walked past the end of the wall about three times! We viewed the wall that was part of the East Side Gallery; there was lots of artistic graffiti covering every inch of the wall that was left. It’s crazy to think that this wall divided Berlin into East and West.

TV TOWER – FERNSEHTURM

The famous Television Tower in Berlin was constructed between 1965 and 1969 and it’s there for all of us to head up and view the whole of the city from. You can have breakfast there, lunch or dinner; or even just head up for a drink and to admire the city. We popped up for a cocktail which was delicious. If you’re looking to visit the tower then I’d definitely recommend booking in advance, especially if you want to eat. It gets booked up very quickly.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust Memorial, is a memorial in Berlin to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, designed by architect Peter Eisenman and engineer Buro Happold. It’s a stunning and very large memorial very close to the Brandenburg Gate so you can visit both spots on the same day. I wasn’t too sure on what the actual memorial symbolised so I did a little research once I got back to the UK, but there is various views. To me it did have a cemetery feel to it, which makes sense.

BRANDENBURG GATE

As I said above, this was just around the corner from the Holocaust Memorial. It was a shame that on the day I went to see the gate the statue on top of it was being cleaned so it was very difficult to get a good shot. This is one of the best known landmarks in Berlin so it’s a definite must see.

MITTE

Mitte is a district in Berlin where the TV Tower resides along with many shops and quirky streets. My boyfriend and I spent a while here strolling around and discovered some really amazing spots; including the images below which was a secret alleyway that led into a graffiti bar and art shop. I would definitely recommend walking around this area, it’s very cool and has a Soho sort of feel to it.
