WHERE TO SHOP IN NEW YORK CITY

New York isn’t just about the sightseeing, it’s also about the shopping! There are so many brands that are either not available in the UK, too expensive to ship, or don’t have a store. So when I booked New York, Robin and I made a long list of shops we wanted to visit. From fashion to footwear, and beauty, we had a decent shopping list we were ready to attack. We left the last 2 days on our itinerary for shopping, but also when we were in an area of the city where a shop was, we ticked it off our list there and then; just in case we ran out of time to go back.

Because I sat googling cool shops in New York, makeup shops in New York etc etc, I thought I’d put together a post on where to shop, just to make all your lives easier when it comes to visiting the big apple.

OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE COSMETICS

They sent me a few of their lip tars and pigments a few years ago which I loved, so I had to go and check out their shop. It’s not a brand that’s available in the UK, which is a shame, so I was never able to order anything else from their site. The store is located on Ludlow St and the decor is so instagrammable! I loved how they displayed their range with wooden stands and greenery. The staff in the shop were SO helpful too, which was lovely. I’m not a MUA so know nothing when it comes to mixing products or what to use as a base etc. But the girl in the store showed me a few really useful tips with their cosmetics.

FREE PEOPLE

I remember falling in love with this brand a few years ago when I discovered them through Nasty Gal. I was attracted to them because of their amazing shoe range! It’s not so much my style now, it’s very boho, hippy, coachella; however it’s such a cute store, it’s well worth a visit! There were definitely a few pieces that caught my eye! It’s situated just off of Fifth Avenue and opposite the Rockefeller Centre, so really easy to find.

RICKY’S NYC

WOW!! What a store! I was told to visit Ricky’s because of their vast selection of beauty products. It’s ridiculous the amount they have in their store, considering it looks rather small on the outside. They even had a nail bar out the back. I went to their store on Broadway in the Soho area and it was really good. I think it was one of their bigger stores as I saw one a few days after and it looked like it mainly offered hair products. You could get everything from here: nails, hair, beauty, makeup and so much more! We so need a Ricky’s in the UK!

VICTORIA’S SECRET

I don’t actually own any VS lingerie, however I absolutely LOVE their catwalk every year; the designs amaze me every time. We were just strolling past on Fifth Avenue and Robin asked if I wanted to go inside. I randomly decided to and I’m so glad I did! On the top floor they have a museum where you can view some of the outfits from the catwalk and OH MY LORD, they are unreal! Beautifully embellished, quirky designs and you can see them right up close. Well worth a visit!

AMERICAN TWO SHOT

This was a little find on our last day. We decided to stroll down a few streets in Soho we hadn’t walked down yet and we stumbled across this shop. I loved the decor inside and they had some really cute products on sale; from clothing to stationary. It was a little on the pricey side so I didn’t make a purchase, but if you’re in Soho shopping, definitely go and have a look.

BROADWAY MARKET

This was another find we stumbled across whilst strolling through Soho. It was basically a mini market with stalls featuring handmade goods from artists and designers and vintage clothing and accessories. I found lots of things I liked from sunglasses, candles and fun patches. We actually came back to this again on our trip because we loved it so much.

REFORMATION

Another brand we don’t have in the UK is Reformation. I hadn’t planned on going to the shop at first, but then we randomly walked past it after visiting Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics and had to have a look inside. I loved the way they had displayed their clothing, it had a bit of an Anthropologie x Urban Outfitters vibe to it. There’s actually quite a few shops around Ludlow St, so it’s definitely an area I’d check out.

DOVER STREET MARKET

This market is sort of in the middle of nowhere. We went to it after going up the Empire State Building, so I’d definitely work this one into your itinerary rather than just randomly visiting it. It’s very upmarket featuring designer brands, so the price tags are steep. But it’s worth a visit just to see the way they have created this market. There’s 7 floors in total and there’s really quirky art displays and decor throughout.

They are shops I’d recommend to visit if you’re planning a trip to NYC. Obviously I’d do the well known ones too like Macy’s and Bloomingdales; I popped into those two just because they’re two of the biggest department stores and everyone associates New York with them.
