#MYSUPERDRY SHANGHAI CITY GUIDE

Travel

Superdry very kindly sent Robin and I all the way to Shanghai to experience the city, and all I can say is WOW! I’ve never ventured over that side of the world before, I think the furthest I’ve been is Dubai, so it was amazing to be able to experience a different culture and scenery. Superdry organised a fantastic itinerary for us whilst we were out there and so I thought I would share a little city guide featuring: things you can do, see and eat.

Firstly we stayed at Hotel Indigo on the Bund, which can I just say was unreal! The staff, service and room were amazing and I can’t fault them on anything. Our room consisted of a living space, bedroom, walk in wardrobe and bathroom and overlooked the river with a stunning view. The hotel was in a great location; everything we did on our itinerary was pretty much within a 30 minute taxi ride from our hotel. I would definitely recommend this accommodation if you’re planning a trip to the city.

THINGS TO DO

Shanghai Disneyland: Who doesn’t love Disney? This year they celebrated their first anniversary since opening in 2016 so it’s a great Disney to visit as it’s so new. It features the biggest Disney Castle in the world, so again a must see and there is so much to do there from rides, to shopping and eating Disney themed foods.

Motorbike Tour: We took a motorbike tour for an hour and our guide drove us around the outside of the Yu Gardens and surrounding areas. It was an amazing experience because we were learning about parts of Shanghai and their culture whilst getting to see it in the flesh. It was such an eye opener as well, as our guide took us to some of the poorer areas of the city which was a massive contrast to the new high rise, glamorous buildings that now dominate Shanghai. Apparently in 5 years time these peoples homes that we saw won’t even be there anymore. They’re going to move everyone out, knock down their community and build even more high rise buildings.

Shopping on Nanjing Road: This road is one of the busiest shopping streets in Shanghai; it’s basically their Oxford Street, London. It’s definitely the place to go if you want to buy anything and everything. From food shops, to markets to department stores and shopping malls, Nanjing Road has it all. There is an East and West to the road and we actually ended up checking both ends out; the West end seemed much more luxury than the East, however we loved seeing all of the giant Chinese shopping signs on the East side of the road.

Yuz Museum: Whilst we were in Shanghai the Yuz Museum was actually exhibiting KAWS, one of Robin’s favourite artists. The museum was a little far out, so I’d recommend hopping in a cab, there’s also nothing around it either but they have a great cafe there to grab some food; we actually ended up eating lunch there when we went. It’s definitely worth a check to see if there anything exhibiting that you’re interested in. It’s got a really cool warehouse feel to the space and from what I’ve researched they always exhibit great artists.

THINGS TO SEE

Yu Gardens: Yu Garden translates itself as happiness garden and was built to offer somewhere peaceful for the Pan family in the Ming Dynasty to go. The actual garden itself is surround by beautiful architecture, sculptures and carvings, and the busy Yuyuan bazaar. It’s like a maze trying to find the entrance to the garden, but once you do, you can’t miss it. It was one of my highlights of the city that there could be such a tranquil, beautiful garden surrounded by towering modern buildings. There is so much attention to detail, from the winding paths, rockery and ponds to the exquisite architecture and artwork. The bazaar is also worth a stroll around as there are some great tourist shops and places to grab a bite to eat.

Jing’an Temple: Again, another highlight of the city. The Jing’an Temple is one of the most well known temples in Shanghia and is situated at the end of West Ninjang Road. It is the most beautiful temple which features the most eye catching gold architecture. In the temple there are three big halls – Hall of Heavenly Kings,Three Sage Hall and the Mahavira Hall. It was really beautiful seeing buddist rituals and religious ceremonies taking place whilst we were there.

Jing’an Park: Just opposite Jing’an Temple, this is definitely a must see, even for just a quick stroll through. It’s one of the only green spaces in the city and it’s home to a very well known restaurant that overlooks a pretty pond.

The Bund: We were lucky enough to stay on the bund, Shanghai’s most famous waterfront. But if you don’t end up staying there, then do go visit! There are lots of hotels situated along it with rooftop bars for you to enjoy the view day or night. Or if you don’t mind heights, you can head up the Shanghai Tower, the tallest building in the city. I much preferred the view at night as there are lots of flashing lights along the bund from boats and buildings.

PLACES TO EAT

CHAR: This restaurant was actually based in our hotel on one of the top floors. You get to enjoy the views over the bund whilst eating the most amazing food. Robin and I opted to share a steak between us and we have to say, it’s the best one we’ve ever tried. You even got to pick your own steak knife from a briefcase and were offered a selection of salts from all over the world. Great food and a great view.

Din Tai Fung: A very popular restaurant specialising in steamed dumplings. I had never tried a dumpling before Shanghai, but now I can officially say I’ve tried one and I loved it. The rest of the food was also delicious; the menu had a variety of options and we picked a few plates and shared them between us. This is also a great restaurant if you’re looking for someone affordable.

Wagas: We were told about this place on our flight over and on one of the days of our trip we were searching for somewhere for lunch and came across one. It’s basically a juice bar but they serve amazing wraps and pasta dishes!

Hard Rock: Yes, we went to Hard Rock whilst in Shanghai, but only because it’s a ‘thing’ Robin and I have. We’ve been to quite a few now all over the world and when we found out there was one in Shanghai we just had to go.

So that’s #MySuperdry Shanghai City Guide. I’d love to know if any of you have been and what your top places are that you visited! Throughout the trip I wore clothing and accessories from Superdry, and you can find all of the links below if you’re interested in shopping my looks.
