HOW I EDIT MY INSTAGRAM PHOTOS

Lifestyle

I’m pretty sure we each have our own way of editing our Instagram photos. However I received a few comments recently asking me questions like, ‘how do you get the fuzziness on your photos’, ‘how do you get your images so sharp’ etc. So I thought I’d put together a post on how I edit my Instagram photos, so it answers all of your questions. Firstly, 99% of the time all of my Instagram photos are shot on one of my cameras; either my Canon G7X Mark II for beauty shots or my Canon 70D for my fashion shots. This means I am able to achieve sharp, detailed photos that I can then work with to get the desired ‘instagram’ look I want. Both of these cameras have a wifi function which means I can easily transfer the images from my camera to my phone within minutes. I love this function as it’s really useful to have whilst on the go or when I’m travelling without my laptop. To show you exactly how I edit my photos, I thought I would screenshot all of the different steps on my phone, and show you every step from the original photo, to the Instagram worth one.

FACETUNE

Facetune is the first app I put my images through. I’ve been using this app for a while now and absolutely love it. There’s some great tools within the app and the main ones I use are: Whiten, Smooth, Details, Patch and Tones. So let’s start with the original beauty shot.

I always like to prep my skin first using the Smooth and Patch tools. For this particular shot my skin looks pretty smooth anyway so I decided against using this tool. I usually use it for super close up eye shots, where I smooth out my eye makeup if I need to blend a little more and even sometimes the skin around my eyes. I find this helps the actual eye makeup pop. I did however need to use the patch tool as I had a tiny speck of glitter on my cheek. The way this works, is it picks up another area of skin to replace the area where there might be a blemish.

The next step is using the Tones tool and the reason I use this is to touch up my makeup. It might be that there’s a patch missing on my lipstick or like the image above you can see the join of the false lashes. I use the Picker tool to select a colour nearby I want to shade over the top with and then I use the Tones tool to colour over. A good tip is to gently dab your fingers on your phone screen as sometimes the colour can come out quite intense. If I make it look really obvious as the Tones tool is flat colours, I then just use the Eraser, again dabbing on my screen.

Moving onto the next tool, I select Details. Now I use this on every single one of my Instagram photos to specifically sharpen certain areas of my photos; it makes all of my makeup pop! For example if I’m wearing glitter or a metallic eyeshadow, it usually looks quite dull in the original image; but after using the Details tool, the glitter or metallic is much more noticeable and you can see the sparkles. For this specific shot, I applied the tool on my lashes, glitter liner and sparkly liquid lipstick. It’s made a subtle difference in this photo, but honestly, try it out for makeup shots.

VSCO

Once I’ve finished editing on Facetune, I save the image and move onto VSCO. Now this is an app I’ve recently introduced into my Instagram editing routine and that was mainly because of the variety of filters they have. When it comes to using this app, there’s so much you can do, so if you are new to it definitely have a play around before you go ahead and use it. You’ve got the general: brightening, contrast, sharpen etc tools, but then you have a fabulous one called Grain; that I know a lot of people are using now. The one thing I love most about it, is the old school photograph vibe it gives an image. I tend to not do much in this app apart from apply a filter, which you can alter how much of the filter is applied to your photograph and then Grain. The most common filter I use is: FR4 and then I add around 3.0-4.0 Grain. And another great thing about this app, is that you can save your edits so when you go to edit another photo in the future you don’t have to go through the whole process. You just click one button!

INSTAGRAM

I’m nearly ready to post now… I know, a lot of edits going into making an Instagram worthy photograph. It’s crazy really, but one success to social media is consistency and having a clear image/branding. A lot of people I know don’t actually make use of Instagram’s tools, but I personally think they’re great. I ignore their filters, but their general tools come in handy and I mainly use: Brightness, Contrast, Warmth, Highlights and Shadows. The first two tools are pretty explanatory, but when it comes to Warmth I like to make my images a little on the cooler side. It just works for my look, especially as I’ve got blue hair. Then I like to add in a little Highlight and darken the Shadows; I find this gives the image more depth. And then I’m ready to click post!

Above you can see the original image next to the edited. I just love the depth, cool tones and vibe all of the edits give my photographs. I do have many more apps I sometimes use to give my images different effects, but I’ll save those for another post!

Peace
