DIY WEDDING IKEA HACKS

Lifestyle

If you’re planning a wedding, I have to recommend heading to Ikea. They have some great bulk items that make the perfect wedding decor once they’ve been jazzed up. Weddings are an expensive time in everyone’s life so trying to cut costs where you can is a good way to help your budget; and we all know Ikea is cheep and cheerful.

In this blog post I’m going to introduce you to 3 Ikea hacks I did; all super easy! And the only thing you need to have is spray paint. A great place for spray paint is Fat Buddha, they have a great assortment of colours! I stuck to my wedding theme colours and purchased gold, pink and blue spray paint and I was ready to DIY my Ikea decor.

IKEA GLASS VASES

I had 20 8ft tables to dress in my wedding venue, so I knew I was going to need a lot of decor to fill them up. One idea I had was to get some cute vases in a few different colour ways and pop some flowers in them. I searched everywhere for cheap vases but I could never find anywhere other than Ikea that offered product in bulk, so Ikea was my only option. I found some really lovely pink glass vases called GENERÖST which were priced at £2 each. It wasn’t a bad price, so I purchased 40 of them so I could have 2 on each table.

But I still wanted more colour ways. I looked all over Ikea, but they didn’t offer anything else within my wedding palette, so I thought, wait a minute. Can you spray paint glass? I hopped onto google on my phone and found out you could! So I grabbed about 40 of the plain glass VILJESTARK vases priced at 50p each! Yup… 50p! What a bargain!

When it came to spray painting them, I opted for gold as I thought this would look best. I went for the Montana Gold Spray Paint which can be used on pretty much all surfaces and is touch dry within 20 minutes and waited for a sunny day. I laid down some bin bags, spread the vases out and sprayed the shit out of them! I couldn’t believe how good they looked. They looked like I had purchased them that way.

IKEA LANTERNS

Another Ikea hack I did was purchase a few different lanterns that were black or white originally, and again spray painted gold. I chose a few of the cute ROTERA ones as these were just £2.45 and then a mixture of the small and large TOPPIG ones. I then used exactly the same spray paint as the Ikea vases and they all took really well to the gold. I had to take out the windows of the Rotera lanterns but it was super easy to do. I made sure to keep the separate glass windows on paper so they weren’t likely to get scratched whilst being out of the lanterns. Once the lanterns were touch dry, I popped the windows back in. Again, I was so pleased with how these all turned out.

CARD & GIFT BOX

Another fabulous Ikea hack I created was to create a cards and gift box for my welcome table at the wedding. I had seen someone else do something similar, however they kept the SOCKER greenhouse white; I wanted it gold. When you purchase the greenhouse, it’s packaged up in a box and needs to be built. Everything is mostly separate luckily, apart from the sides of the greenhouse had the plastic windows secured in and you couldn’t take them out. Luckily these had a plastic film over the top of them so it meant we could spray paint them easily without ruining the windows.

I used the same spray paint again, but I had to do this Ikea hack in stages because there were lots of different sides we needed to spray paint. We focused on one side, waited until touch dry and then turned it over to finish the rest. This did take a lot longer to dry than we thought, I think we left it for about 2 hours between the different sections we needed to spray.

Once it was dry though, we fixed it altogether which was really easy to do and we popped a sticker on the front of the box with our names and wedding date. And voila! We had a cute gold cards & gift box!

IKEA CRATES

The last Ikea hack we did was build and spray paint wooden crate boxes. I purchased 2 sizes of these KNAGGLIG boxes in small and large and made sure I got a selection. I’d seen images on Pinterest of wedding decor where wooden boxes had been stacked on top of each other with plants and candles added in and it looked really lovely. I thought for all those little spaces around the venue I’d probably have, it would be nice to fill it with a few coloured boxes and plants.

I chose to spray paint a few pink, a few blue and a few gold. Before getting to the fun painting bit though, we had to build all the boxes, which you needed a screwdriver for. It wasn’t too bad building them, it was just a little painful for your hands as it was quite repetitive building a few! Once they were build we got onto spray painting and they looked so fabulous when they were finished!
