BEDROOM MAKEOVER – Before and After

Lifestyle
jungle bedroom decor

My bedroom makeover and reveal is here! This UK lockdown is definitely giving me a kick up the booty to get all of my little jobs I keep putting off done. Our bedroom isn't completely finished, but the main basis of the room is; just needs a little more decor and wall art.

This room was probably the room in the whole house that had the least work done to it. Essentially all that needed doing was rewiring the electrics, prepping and painting the walls/ceiling, new flooring and dressing the room. We actually didn't stumble upon any issues with this room either, unlike the others... Thankfully it was straightforward! So let's chat about the stages this room went through to become our master bedroom.

Below you'll find images of what the room looked like before. Pale blue walls, white woodwork, a brown UPVC window and floorboards. The room was dull and like the rest of the house, hasn't been cared for. The only thing about the room I loved was the original door; it had the most beautiful floral embossed glass windows. So we decided to keep the door and restore it.

I think there were only a few plug sockets in this room and they were the bulky plastic boxed ones, so when we had the room rewired we had a rough bedroom layout in our head already so I made sure to put new sockets in accordingly. Either side of the bed as we wanted bedside tables and then a few more on other walls in case we wanted a floor lamp/TV in the space. Always good to have more sockets than you think you'll need.

PREPPING THE ROOM

Once the room had been rewired, our decorator came in and started prepping. He revealed cracks in the walls and ceiling and filled them in. Repairing the walls and woodwork took a while but it was worth it. I didn't get the room plastered as I didn't think we needed to. There's a few marks in the current plaster but it adds to the quirkiness of it being a Victorian house.

As you can see in this photo of the window in the room, the cracks were pretty huge! But our decorator did a great job at repairing them.

Another bit of prep that needed doing was the coving. If you scroll back up to the images of the room before, you'll see a random light switch within the coving. This was so the previous owners could switch off the ceiling light from the comfort of their own bed. I mean that sounded delightful to be honest, but I wanted the coving to be consistent on each wall, so I had someone come in, match it up and replace it. Actually a very cheap job, I was surprised. Usually any home renovations cost a lot, but this I thought was very reasonable.

You'll see this room houses a large radiator. We actually kept this as our decorator said he could paint it to match the walls and I kind of liked the thought of that. I do think we should have changed it, but the living room and bedroom were the first rooms we renovated as we wanted to get those liveable before moving in. But basically nothing went to plan and I do regret rushing these rooms. But this is our first renovation, being absolutely clueless to it. I now know what order to do jobs and how I'd plan it all if I ever did it again.

Once the walls and ceiling were prepped, it was onto painting. I had already decided on a Cole and Sons wallpaper for a feature wall with our bed against it, so I wanted a paint colour that would compliment the print of the wallpaper. We'd already had Farrow and Ball used on our living room walls and I really liked the outcome, so we had a look through their colour selection for the bedroom.

I stumbled upon Inchrya Blue and had a little look on Instagram at how the colour looked in peoples homes. A great tip by the way because, depending on lighting, paint can look very different. Even though it had blue in the name, it looked like it was more green, so we decided to opt for that colour.

I love how dark the walls are. I wanted a space that felt cosy to come into in the evenings to wind down for bed. Dark interiors do that for me.

When it came to the woodwork, we kept it white; all the skirting boards, picture rails, coving, ceiling and the door. The wood paint was from Valspar and so was the ceiling paint - Perfect White. I really love their satin paint, it definitely looks more matte compared to other brands where sometimes they can have a sheen.

Now onto the wallpaper. One of my favourite things about this room. I fell in love with this palm print design from Cole and Son's. And yes it is a little on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for. You can really tell this is a luxury wallpaper, it's matte and just looks stunning when it's put up.

I love how the design is a mix of green/blue shades of palm leaves on a black background. It opened up the colour palette of the room for me.

Once the walls were complete, it was time to fit the flooring. We opted for the same flooring as the living room - LVT. I wanted some sort of consistency throughout the house and I also thought this tone of wood worked well with the dark interior.

You've probably spotted the brass plug sockets. I love these! I got these from Screwfix; the whole house has brass fixtures for lighting and electrics. It really adds to the decor of the space.

And that was it. That's what the room went through in terms of getting it prepped for furnishing and decor. Looks simple, but it took a lot of work from our tradesmen.

Now onto the best part of the room... Furnishing and decor! The easiest purchase for this room was the bed. I had seen Made.com launch a brand new bed when we had just bought the house and I fell in love. We were so excited to finally have a king size bed and I loved the fact that the Delia bed had ottoman storage. Storage is key for us as it's what we lacked in our previous home.

I loved the shell scallop style headboard of the Delia bed, along with the velvet fabric and shade of blue/green. It matched the bedroom colour palette perfectly.

Picking bedding for the bed was difficult. I had fallen in love with this Emma J Shipley bedding (in the photo) but was worried it would be too much. I mocked up a few designs on photoshop and shared with my followers on Instagram, and the majority said they preferred plain pink bedding with a leopard faux fur throw. So I actually opted for that at first. I had bought a pink bedding set from Next but when I made the bed, something was missing for me. So after a few months of still not feeling the bedding, I stripped the bed and Emma J Shipley kindly gifted me her Zanzibar bedding range. As soon as I put it on the bed, I knew. Yes it's clashing with the palm print, but it just works.

I added in a new colour into the bedroom colour palette with the bed. The dusty pink from the Emma J Shipley Zanzibar pillow worked really well with the greens/blues, so I bought a dusty pink velvet bedspread to match. It was so hard trying to find one, but luckily this one popped up from Debenhams in the sale.

Then to finish off the bedding, I purchased two plain velvet blue cushions from Made.com. Something to break up the bedding print. I was so happy to have finally created my dreamy bed setting.

Moving on to the rest of the furniture; I have to say I struggled. I went to lots of furniture shops and just couldn't find anything that I felt looked right. And then I searched the web for months. Either the furniture was overpriced or not the right shade of wood. I was also worried about not having an actual set of bedroom furniture and it looking odd. But I was on La Redoute having a little look at their range and I found this set called Quilda Vintage. I really liked how retro the pieces look and they had a full range of bedroom pieces: bedside table, bench, wardrobe and chest of drawers. They had a sale... It was fate!

Furnishing and decor

On one side of the room is the feature wall with our bed. Next to it sits our bedside tables and chest of drawers. Moving to the other side, we have the wardrobe and this cute little corner for Robin to get dressed in the mornings.

All of the furniture in this room is for my Husband... Yes I have my own room dedicated to all of my clothing and makeup! My dream dressing room which I will reveal soon! Robin doesn't own too many clothes, so all of his stuff fits perfectly under the bed, in the wardrobe and chest of drawers and also hidden behind that chair in the corner above. He's collected cool trainers over the years and keeps them in plastic storage boxes, so I've hidden them all behind the sofa. They're not the most appealing things.

I do love this little corner though with the up-cycled mirror and rattan chair. Jes Rose does amazing printed vinyl stickers that you can jazz up furniture with, so I stuck this cool leopard print banana leaf design on a plain pine mirror that Robin's mum gave us.

The rattan chair was bought from Cox and Cox. It was originally going in the living room, but for some reason I got an obsession with buying armchairs and we ended up having too many in the house... Oops! But this one works really well being in the bedroom.

We popped a bench at the end of the bed and a rug on the floor, both from La Redoute. The bench is handy for the dogs jumping up on the bed and if Robin is putting his shoes on. It also just adds to the space and dresses it up a bit more.

Moving back to the other side of the room, we've got the bedside tables and chest of drawers. The drawers have been dressed with a few homeware pieces for the time being until we fully decide on the space, but for now it looks cute. You might have also spotted a few plants in the room, these are all artificial. We had some live plants a while ago but this room just doesn't get enough light for them to live a long life, and Robin and I are super forgetful at watering them. Artificial plants was the way forwards for us and we got all of these from Blooming Artificial.

Originally I had wanted bedside tables with drawers. We actually did end up ordering some from Wayfair but they were just awful quality. I was so glad when we had found these from La Redoute. I loved that they were different. I like how they have two tiers so we can pop any necessary bedtime bits on the bottom tier, whilst the top stays clean and slick with our table lamps.

We have two lights, because why not! The green ones are from Graham & Green and then the letters S & R are from a pop up that was inside the Central London West Elm store. We bought them without deciding where they'd go, but when we were furnishing the bedroom we thought they'd look cool on the bedside tables on each of our sides of the bed. They work because they light up blue.

Then finally the curtains. As you can see I added pink into the bedroom colour palette, so I thought another place to add pink is the curtains. I got these made to measure velvet dusty pink ones from Curtains2go - a great website by the way! Super affordable and I love that they're made to measure. I wanted ceiling to floor length curtains which are hard to come by if buying them shop made.

And that's as far as we've got with the bedroom. It's so nearly there! But I thought I'd share the bedroom makeover with you now as all the little extra bits I do to the space can be shared on my sophiehannahhome Instagram page.

I hope you love the space as much as I do. I love waking up in this room every day and also getting cosy at night with the dark interior and moody lighting. It's amazing to finally have a dreamy master bedroom that we've always craved!
